Reimagining science education

in everyday, public spaces

We are an educational design, build, and research 501(c)(3) nonprofit that revitalizes public spaces with inquiry based learning

  • We harness the social and emotional advantages of learning in public spaces. Exploring a place and helping improve it strengthens community ties and fosters a sense of belonging.

  • Knowledge is power, and we offer a variety of scientific investigations that help people uncover hidden aspects of their neighborhoods. Additionally, we create exhibits that instrument the landscape, providing frameworks for monitoring changes over time and the invisible dynamics shaping our evolving environments.

  • Our work uniquely enhances placemaking while supporting educational initiatives that connect people with nature. By implementing our approach to bay trails, river walks, and parks, we create hands-on site interpretation and exploration, significantly enriching existing environmental education efforts.

We’ve spent over a decade rethinking the

what, where, why, and with whom

of hands-on science education.

Supported in part by the National Science Foundation and local partnerships, we’ve brought 60+ exhibits to over a dozen public sites—exploring key questions:

  • How do we broaden the audience and impacts pioneered by hands-on science institutions?

  • What practices best serve communities in need to better understand, reimagine, and equitably recreate public spaces?

  • Does learning more about a place and each other encourage us to identify with and care for communal spaces?
