Our Mission
To bring hands-on, place-based science education into the public realm—every day, for everyone.
We inspire communities to reimagine and transform public spaces through creative placemaking and place-based learning. We expand access to science and scientific practices, engaging communities traditionally underserved by museums and institutions. Through research and shared insights, we empower similar efforts nationwide.
Less physics, more civics: Science as a part of everyday life
-
Science museums are among the most trusted cultural institutions, yet their audiences have grown increasingly exclusive. Dawson (2014) found that people from low-income and minority backgrounds often feel these spaces are “not for them.” Structural barriers—such as high admission fees and transportation costs—reinforce this exclusion, perpetuating educational and economic inequities.
-
Independent evaluations and research show our work has reached over 1 million unpaid visitors, positively shaping San Francisco’s social and emotional landscape. (Gutwill, J. P., Lani, S., & Chien, H.-Y. 2019) Key outcomes include:
Greater understanding of science in daily life
Increased participation in inclusive design/build processes for equitable placemaking
Heightened awareness of natural and built system interactions. Additionally, findings highlight the relevance of this work for hyperlocal climate action, particularly through the lens of environmental justice.

Work locally to create beloved learning spaces, foster community exchange, and build partnerships that ensure our collaborations reflect shared values, hopes, and ambitions.
